WITH JONAS STEUR

Since 2000 he has been releasing his music to the world, slowly creating an impressive discography. With several big hits like Tales from the south, Castamara and Fall to pieces, just to name a few , Jonas made his name in the trance scene. His music has been played by all the big names and has been used in games, tv shows and even has been spotted in a Hollywood movie. He has been producing music ranging from techno to house but eventually always comes back to a warm progressive melodic sound.
FL – What are your main music influences? What drove you into electronic music, more particularly, progressive and trance?
There are many influences but one the biggest ones is the music of vangelis. I have been listening to his music since I was a child and it always made me dream about futuristic places beyond earth , sometimes strange, sometimes cold , sometimes beautiful and melancholic. This is what usually is in my mind when producing music myself , trying to recreate these feelings. Next to that I also love technology, so synths, mixers and computers always attracted me a lot.
FL – Do you use samples in your productions?
I use samples mostly for percussive elements and sound effects. Throughout the years I gathered a quite big collection of all kinds of hits, wooshes, buzzes etc ... Extremely useful !
FL – What is your normal setup when producing music? If Future Loops was to have a peek at your laptop what software would we definitely find open?
Since 1999 I´m a Cubase user so my main setup nowadays consists of a powerful PC with Cubase and a truckload of plugins. Currently I´m in love with the artruria CS80 and the korg polysix. Both of them are featured quite a lot on the sample pack I did for Future Loops.
FL - Do you have a favorite VST plugin? What´s the audio hardware of your dreams (and do you have it yet)?
As I just mentioned my current favorites are the Artruria cs80 and the Korg polysix. The hardware I would love to have is the Yamaha cs80, a 100kg vintage beast from the late 70´s and possibly one of the most musical synths ever made. They are quite rare, expensive and hard to maintain so if I ever will own one is not very likely, that´s why its a dream of course .
FL-Would you like to share a production tip with our users?
Don´t become a victim of the loudness war. It´s ok to pump up your sound a bit with compressors and limiters but know when to stop. Too much music nowadays is extremely tiring to listen to because of extreme overcompression.
FL – When you first started producing music more than 10 years ago what software/hardware were you using ? And what changed the most in terms of your work flow while producing music since then ?
I was using an ancient cubase 3.0 on a barely working pc in combination with a Roland mc303 and a Yamaha cs1x. A bit later I added an Emu esi4000 sampler and upgraded to Cubase VST. I realised quite early that vst was going to be the future and since then I mostly have been selling hardware and getting more powerful computers loaded with better and better plugins and virtual instruments. The way I work nowadays is quite different than the early days were it still was about controlling external instruments with MIDI and hoping everything would work.
FL – Jonas Steur Prog House is a very comprehensive sample pack that features loads of elements for progressive sound production. There´s a great balance between rhythm and melody. Is sound-design a big aspect of your work method?
I spend quite a lot of time making my own synth patches indeed. Having a distinctive sound is very important for a producer I think. Because of working for years with electronic dance music and doing dj gigs world wide I also got a good feeling for what works on the dance floor rhythmically .
FL – How do you see dance music and genres like progressive today and where do you think it is evolving to ?
At this moment everything seems to merge again more and more, the borders between the sub genres are blurring. According to me this is a good thing as I never liked the boxes mentality in music production. If it sounds good, it´s good, who cares what sub genre it is.
FL - In conclusion a word to the Future Loops and Jonas Steur fans out there. What are in your opinion the highlights of Jonas Steur Prog House and how do you see it being used?
I hope that people are going to appreciate the diversity of the pack and are going to use the samples in ways I´m totally not expecting !
